The Cheboygan County Council on Aging has many great programs for the elderly in Northern MI. One in particular is the “Home Delivered Meals Program,” also known as “Meals on Wheels.” To help offset some of the cost the Northern Michigan Toyota Dealers through Fernelius Toyota have given the Council on Aging a brand new 2012 Toyota Matrix.
Each year, more than 50,000 hot, nutritional, frozen, and liquid meals are delivered to the homebound seniors unable to prepare their own meals. As the meals are delivered each day, it also serves as a way to check on the frail and elderly to make sure they are safe. The program has 4 different routes averaging 100 miles each day per route.
As one can imagine, repairing and replacing the delivery vehicles comes at a high price. With many miles on the road, the vehicles need to be replaced frequently. The compact hatchback gets excellent gas mileage and a warmer oven will be installed to keep the food warm while on the road. “This is corporate America at its best. Fernelius Toyota and the Northern Michigan Toyota Dealers are stepping in where there is an unmet need,” said Michael Bur, Cheboygan County Council on Aging Executive Director.
“We feel privileged to be the local Toyota dealer,” said owner, Dave Fernelius. “Toyota is a great company that focuses on local community involvement and employment throughout the United States. Last year alone 1,257,028 Toyota vehicles were produced in the 10 plants here in the U.S. and 365,000 people were employed by Toyota.”
“We feel so blessed to have this relationship with the Northern Michigan Toyota Dealer’s and we hope the community recognizes their generosity and will consider them for their future needs,” said Bur.
